Ikea launches Qi wireless charging furniture range

Mar 2, 2015

Qi technology proves again to be the No1 standard as yet another huge brand endorses it. Swedish retailer Ikea has launched a range of furniture which can charge your smartphone wirelessly

"The range integrates subtle white charging pads into lamps for the floor and table, two desks and two bedside tables. Alternatively, the Jyssen wireless charger can be attached to any flat surface to recharge enabled smartphones, bypassing the need for unsightly cables.

Qi wireless charging pads use transmitter and receiver coils to generate a magnetic field which induces a voltage in the receiver coil. The voltage can then power a smartphone or recharge its battery simply by resting a phone on the pad. Once placed on the pad, a notification pops up to alert the user the device is charging.

The majority of smartphones now sold come with inbuilt Qi wireless charging, the inductive charging standard. This standard means any compatible phone can charge from any Qi charging surface, eliminating the need for chargers built only for specific phone models.
Jeanette Skjelmose, Ikea business area manager of lighting and wireless charging, said the range was born from the inconvenience of cable mess and people struggling to charge their phones...

... Last month both Starbucks and McDonald's announced the integration of Aircharge wireless charging spots in outlets across London and the rest of the UK.

Ikea’s wireless charging range will be available in Ikea stores across the UK from mid-April, with products starting from £30."
