Ikea launches Qi wireless charging furniture range

Qi technology proves again to be the No1 standard as yet another huge brand endorses it. Swedish retailer Ikea has launched a range of furniture which can charge your smartphone wirelessly

"The range integrates subtle white charging pads into lamps for the floor and table, two desks and two bedside tables. Alternatively, the Jyssen wireless charger can be attached to any flat surface to recharge enabled smartphones, bypassing the need for unsightly cables.

Qi wireless charging pads use transmitter and receiver coils to generate a magnetic field which induces a voltage in the receiver coil. The voltage can then power a smartphone or recharge its battery simply by resting a phone on the pad. Once placed on the pad, a notification pops up to alert the user the device is charging.

The majority of smartphones now sold come with inbuilt Qi wireless charging, the inductive charging standard. This standard means any compatible phone can charge from any Qi charging surface, eliminating the need for chargers built only for specific phone models.
